[this is good] Difficulty with route mapping exists with most navigation software. The Maps of the N95 (smart2go) did not do too well always in Ireland. It did not contain all the smaller roads and could not distinguish between quality of roads. Neglected roads where I can go 60km/h or where I may drive 80 km/h.  But the most important part is that it gets me where I want to go for the promised ETA.

And Maps failed me only once, in Amsterdam. You can get at a certain spot by car but Maps just failed and sent my in circles. Stupid. However most of the Netherlands including smaller roads show up nicely.  But then Ireland is a bit more rural ;-)

Questions about Navigon:

- Please see if you can find balleymoney near Gorey in Wexford county, Ireland. Maps failed there.
- Also can you plot trips with multiple places to visit?
- Can you preload maps?
- Does it update?
- Does it have quick buttons for like while on a highway? To detour to the closest petrolstation/restaurant etc?
- How many memory is free in the N95 while it is running? Can you switch to other tasks?
- Does it ever crash during long trips or after phonecalls while navigating? Does that work well? Autoswitchback to maps?

Interesting questions. I can't answer on all of them yet but later on for sure.
- Question about balleymoney I have to check at home. Don't have Ireland Maps downloaded on the phone.
- You only can select one place to visit, not multiple.
- Reload maps should work on the computer. Haven't tested it yet. Just connect the memory card to the computer, start the navigon startup and select another map.
- Does it update? - How do you mean? It doen't update the map via the internet like Nokia Maps. All maps have first to be copied from the computer to the memory card, before starting your travel.
- While driving you can change navigation by selecting "New
destination" - "Point of interest" - "nearby" and then you can select
the next petrol station or hotel, restaurant Tourist Attraction and so on.
- How to check the remaing free RAM memory while having the program running?
- The program doesn't crash when receiving calles. At least not at the one call I got until now while navigating with the program.

Geraner

I checked now the memory usage with the program Y-Task.
Without any program running, I have 16 MB free RAM of total 48.
When haveing Navigation MobileNavigator6 running, the free RAM goes down to 8 MB (8060 Kb).
Switching to other tasks while running Navigon MobileNavigator6 is possible without any problem.

Hi geraner, to check the remaining memory you need one of those taskmanagers. Smart2Go/Maps actually is supposed to update the mapdata every 6 month or so. Whenever a new version is available from TeleAtlas or NavTeq, I asked route 66 about it and did not answer the question. But their site stated their maps were from 2004 ;-) I am looking forward to your full fledged review after your trip. Enjoy your holidays.

Geraner

The map included in Navigons software is: Navigon Europe Release 2007/08
A map-coverage can be found here:

Quite new I would say. ;-)

The poor guy doesnt get a chance to enjoy his holidays.  So busy testing the phone and making reports for all of us here... haha. :) :) :)

snoyt

[this is good] Why do you think he wanted to cruise Europe? To test his navigon software ;-)

Merlijn

[esto es genial] Yeah... must be... i am sure it is not to be with his girlfriend eh? hahahaha. :)

Geraner

Don't worry guys, I enjoy my girlfriend and the GPS at the same time! :-)

snoyt

Try maps  too? Check the difference please.

snoyt

Uhhhmmm, Geraner. Was that a typo? Did you not mean to write that you enjoy the girlfriend in you GPS Or are you really into geotagging something other than pictures?

I can figure out why a girl is handy to take on vacation. Thinner blanket needed, saves on ipod batteries (if she can hold a tune) etc...  But as far as I know, live girls and girls GPS systems have very different ideas of how to get somewhere.

[this is good] HAHA. u are evil Snoyt !!!! but it made me laugh out loud in the office!!!

I happen to have a very good relation with the girl in my phone. She keeps me awake on long roadtrips late at night and although I take her home, she is very quiete when I tell her so!

snoyt

Installed Y-task too. Empty box has 18 MB's free from the 48MB.  Maps running leaves 10 MB, 9 If I start the voice navigation. Exiting Maps returns 16 MB free (2MB lost!). So satnav needs about 8-9 MB running. Guess I should be able to take some pictures while navigating ;-)

Running a SIP connection takes about 1 MB. Still where did those 18 MB go to? Now they are lost... 15 MB is my steady companion now.  I guess the 128MB for the new US version is to fix some really bad programming.

As soon as I can connect my phone and laptop to the internet again, I will post some new stuff and screenshots here. The last two days I only could visit an internet-cafe in this little village here in Romania.
By the way, my real girlfriend takes care of me during this time....

snoyt

So does the girl in my phone, tells where I can get food, tells me to wake up, even sings me to sleep. But the other type are nice too. It is pure magic when your eyes relax for a moment from the computerscreen and a mug of fresh thee is standing there where nothing was before.
